AUDIENCE RESEARCH: FDA- launchfilms.com

FDA: http://www.launchfilm.com/

Marauders (Miller, 2016) - 26th December 2016

Synopsis: When a bank is hit by a brutal heist, all evidence points to the owner and his high-powered clients. But as a group of FBI agents dig deeper into the case - and the deadly heists continue - it becomes clear that a larger conspiracy is at play.
Genre: Crime Thriller

Budget: $15,000,000 (estimated)

Rating Certificate15 / Rated R for strong violence, language, brief drug use and nudity

What does this tell us about our target audience?

If we decided as a group to make an opening to a crime thriller then violence and high impact action is to be expected so we would have to take that into consideration with the age rating as it can be unsuitable for younger audiences. As well as this as the majority of thrillers at rated age15, it suggests that their content is needed for it to be a successful thriller and we can take this into consideration when making our opening.

SPLIT (Night Shyamalan, 2017) - 20th January 2017

Synopsis :Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities, and must try and escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.

Genre: Psychological Thriller

Budget:  $10,000,000 (estimated)

Opening Weekend:

 $40,010,975 (USA) (20 January 2017)

Rating Certificate15 for disturbing thematic content and behavior, violence and some language.

What does this tell us about our target audience?

If our group decided to go down the rout of a physiological thriller for our film opening we would have to take into consideration the age rating and the fact that it may not be suitable for all ages depending on language, violence and in particular thematic behavioural scenes. As well as this however, the topic of our film is vital as Split is based around mental health disorders and in particular multiple personality disorder which is a sensitive topic and we would have to be carful.

AUDUENCE REASERCH: Interview

As a group we conducted two interviews, one group interview with two students at our school watching Gone Girl. This enabled us to get different opinions as to what they were expecting from a thriller and their thoughts on the opening. After, we conducted a one on one interview to get a more personal response. During this we played Killers allowing us to discussed in depth the opening and conventions of a thriller. This research allowed us to get feedback and different opinions as well as enabling us to think about how we could add it into our own thriller openings.

TECHNICAL: use of Foley

Foley

Foleying is a sound effect technique for synchronous effects or live effects. The technique is named after a famous sound editor called Jack Foley, who worked at Universal Studios.

Foley Artists match live sound effects with the action of the picture. The sound effects are added "manually" and not cut in with film. Foley artists often use alternative props to recreate the diegetic sound that the actors use on film.

Here is a video to show how Foley artist recreate and mimic the sound.

Production: Creating Our Production Logo

  • Our production company is called 'Shadow Productions'. We chose this name as we believe it sets the sinister and mysterious tone for our thriller opening.
  • From our production logo research we found that the majority of production companies incorporate gold and blue into their logo so we decided to stick to this colour scheme to allow our logo to look as professional as possible. We also used a black background to contrast against these colours and also create a dark atmosphere.
  • Our image is of an animal looking directly out to the viewer with blue beady eyes. This helps engage the viewer in to our thriller opening.
  • The font of 'Shadow Productions' is almost in a hand written font. We believe this to portray a creative element. As well as this the font is quite feminine and 'girly' which represents our production group.

Production Company Logos

Image result for production logos

Image result for production logos

As seen in the images of logos above and below there seems to be an apparent, dark / blue colour scheme. It is also apparent that most of the logos include more or less the same colours, there is not a lot of variation in the logos. Personally, my favourite logo would be the "Dreamworks" logo and as I associate "Dreamworks" with films I watched in my childhood. Using this as an example, i wouldn't use the "Dreamworks" logo for our thriller as we were planning on rating it a 15.

Strada Productions

Whilst researching different production company logos i notice that a lot were based around a dark colour pallet and on this basis the more colourful or images presented in lighter tones stood out to me. However as our film opening is based upon a thriller we need to consider that the dark tones may compliment the eerie and sinister vibe in which we are going for. As a result of this , when my group is designing our own Production company logo i will take these factors into consideration.

REASERCH: Ciara's Production Logos

From this research I have found that the majority of production companies use rich and royal colours such as blue and gold. I can take this research into consideration when we design out groups production logo.

PLANNING: Initial Decision Group Pitch and Audience Feedback

Group Pitch (to class)

Audience Feedback (Q&A)

Q) how are you going to find the location of the grungy looking bathroom?
A) We responded to this by saying we would look around for our best options however now on reflection we will use one of our own bathrooms and use dark lighting and props to make it appear this way.

Q) how quick will the transitions be from the woman looking normal to distraught?
A) we responded to this question as it being a flicker to allow a contrast from her interior and exterior image. However it it also possible for us to separate it more and not make it an immediate transition by adding in other images and footage.

Q) will the credits being in red and the blood show connotations to a horror film rather than a thriller?
A) Originally we thought that this was a good idea to create suspense however through our audience feedback we may change the colour of our credits to white or black depending on the background colour and use a minimal amount of blood to represent a murder.

Q)How will the credits transition on and of the screen?
A) Our credits will fade on and off the screen to represent the loss of a person to the protagonist, however they will appear more rapidly and flicker as the opening goes on to build up the suspense and represent the genre of a physiological thriller.

Q)Who will do the makeup for the actor on screen?
A)We can easily do the makeup ourselves at professional looking standard.

Q)What type of music will be used?
A) we will use an easy music that builds up to the title of the film to create suspense, the music will then begin to fade after the title once it has made and impact so the film can begin.

Q What are the connotations of the title "Unmasked"?
A) As well as the title creating mystery, it also represent the protagonist and how she appears fine on the outside to others, however on the inside she is falling apart due to the murder of her partner and although we get a glimpse of this at the beginning in our opinion, more is revealed later on in the film.

Q) What is your target audience?
A) Our target audience is starts at 15 year olds as thats our age rating as through research we found that this was the typical age rating for thrillers and for a thriller to be successful however as the main cast are adults our target audience are also adults.
